Vitiligo patches on the back of a hand

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a long-term condition in which areas lose pigment, creating lighter or white patches. It can affect different parts of the body, including the face, hands and neck.

What it is

Vitiligo causes areas of skin to lose their colour. It can look different from person to person and may affect different parts of the body. A dermatologist or doctor can help diagnose it and talk through treatment options.

Vitiligo is not contagious, and it is not something you need to hide. Some people choose makeup to soften the contrast between lighter patches and the surrounding skin. Others prefer not to cover them. Either choice is personal.

Makeup does not treat vitiligo or restore lost skin colour. Results depend on the product, how you apply it and your individual skin tone. A shade tool can be a starting point, but it may not predict how a product looks over a vitiligo patch.

The lighter patches have no natural protection against the sun and burn more easily. Ask your healthcare professional which sun protection suits you. Tanning of the surrounding skin also increases the contrast with the lighter patches.

A few facts

  • The size and pattern of the patches vary from person to person.

  • Hair growing within an affected area may also turn white or grey.

  • Areas with less pigment are more vulnerable to sunburn and need appropriate sun protection.
